Kenrokuen (兼六園) is one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan (日本三名園). Its name means “having six characteristics” of a perfect garden: spaciousness, tranquility, artifice, antiquity, water sources and magnificent views.
The iconic bamboo poles and rope are called yukitsuri (which means “snow hanging”). They protect the branches of the pine trees from heavy snow.
Although the snow had not yet arrived that season, there was a quiet atmosphere of reverence from the soft rain falling on the moss.
The two-meter tall Kotojitoro Lantern (on the right side of the photo) is unique for being built with two legs instead of one.
